...a few years ago I met Konstantinos Afianes during a wine tasting of Afianes wine in Konstantin Filippou’s restaurant in Vienna. He told me how he produces wine in amphorae buried in the soil of Ikaria to get the best possible quality. Our conversation was about authenticity, creativity and passion in viticulture. We also talked about the labels on the bottles we drank and I told him that he needed to replace them with something more modern, authentic and passionate to express his approach.
I made some sketches on a napkin - a bounce in the label, a shape that opens up to the content being carried inside the bottle, different from the banality of label design that we know, showing his personal passion for making wine.
The final sketch was an image of the soil the wine comes from and an embracing shape that opens the two-dimensional label to a three-dimensional view that ends up resembling an ancient Greek artifact...
PITHARI DRY WHITE 2020 11% vol
Natural traditional white wine from begleri varietal (100%) with I.G.P. IKARIA. Cloudy with a bright gold color. Smoky, grapefruit, and earthy scents (such as first rain and wet granite), and mushrooms. A pure terroir wine; very complex, rich in minerals, with an evolving taste, and a unique flavor. Hints of wild herbs, tobacco, citrus fruits, and a wet granite finish.
PITHARI DRY RED 2019 12,5% vol
Natural red wine made from Fokiano (100%) varietal with the most ancient winemaking technique of Ikaria. Opaque, natural red-brown color with orange highlights, and long-lasting legs. Ripe forest fruits such as cherry, lychee, and blackberry in spoon sweet. Flavors of sour cherry and wild cherry dominate; intense minerality, with a wet granite finish.
