The existing buildings are typical Burgenland terraced houses with a large garden facing south towards the adjacent Frauenbrunnbach stream.
The buildings have been gutted, and the plan is to extend them to give spacious, up-to-date living quarters with maximal views and perspectives of the surrounding landscape. Living and dining areas are open to the attic space, making for a roomy interior, also on the vertical axis. The front area will be extended by the addition of a conservatory, enhancing the living area, bringing light into the building and providing a starting-point for the new “hinge”.
The result is an extended living area with adjoining sanitary facilities and bedrooms, along with an additional guest area on the first floor. The linking element, a ramp, affords extra space, leading to the striking new extension containing the guest area. The ramp, serving as a junction for the various spatial functions, establishes the correlation within the new structure.
The views into the garden are an integral component of the concept. The living, kitchen and dining areas all look out on to the garden, which thus appears almost part of the interior, drawing the inhabitants into a relationship with the surroundings and the changing seasons. The rear section of the existing building will house a swimming pool and fitness area which can be completely opened towards the garden to provide an outdoor space in summer.
